5 Fun & Healthy Halloween Platter Ideas for Kids

Because spooky snacks don’t have to be sugar bombs 🎃

When your kid’s birthday falls on Halloween (like my youngest!), you kind of have no choice but to go big. And by big, I mean sugar highs, spooky fun, and a whole lot of snacks.

But as a mum, I also know the reality of Halloween: the lollies are endless, the kids are wired, and suddenly you’re hiding lollies in your sock drawer just to get them out of sight.

So… to balance out the chaos, I’ve made it a tradition to create a healthy Halloween platter — something festive, spooky, and full of fun, without the full sugar crash.

Here are my go-to tricks (and treats!) for putting together a Halloween spread your kids will devour—and that you’ll feel good about serving.

👀 1. Add Edible Eyeballs to Everything

Want an instant spooky upgrade? Stick some eyeballs on it. Seriously.

From googly-eye picks to edible eyes you can find at the supermarket, this is hands-down the fastest way to make food Halloween-worthy.

We’ve even drawn eyes on mandarins and cut tiny faces into brie cheese. My boys always crack up when their food “looks back” at them—every time.

Fun tip: Let the kids help you eye-ball everything. Just watch out—they’ll start sticking them on everything (including the dog).

🕷️ 2. Reusable Plastic Spiders = Instant Halloween

I’ve been using the same $2 bag of plastic spiders for years. Scatter them over your fruit, dip bowls, or even tucked into sandwiches (gently!) and you’ve got instant Halloween vibes.

The best part? They’re reusable every year. No waste. No fuss. And the kids love collecting them again after the party.

🍈 3. Cookie Cutters (Not Just for Cookies!)

Halloween cookie cutters are a lifesaver. I’ve used ghost shapes to cut rockmelon slices, and bats to shape cheese.

Just add a straw to poke out little eyes and mouths, and suddenly your everyday fruit becomes haunted. It's ridiculously easy and looks like you went all-out (when really, it took 4 minutes and half a rockmelon).

🫒 4. Turn Olives into Spiders & Creepy Eyes

This trick gets me every time. Slice black olives into halves or rings, then arrange them on dips to look like spider legs—or place two olives side-by-side to make “eyes” in mini sandwiches.

It’s so simple, completely plastic-free, and surprisingly effective at getting kids to try something new.

Bonus: Your creepy-crawly platter just got healthier without them noticing.

🥣 5. Spooky Dips in Fun Bowls

Bring on the dips!

Serve colourful hummus or guac in our bobo&boo snack bowls and dress them up by slicing capsicum “legs” to stick out like a spider.

Feeling fancy? Carve a scary face into a whole capsicum and fill it with dip. Instant Halloween centrepiece. Zero waste. Endless fun.

Why a Healthy Halloween Platter?

With all the sweets around this time of year, it’s nice to balance things out with something healthy but still fun. My kids never even notice they’re eating more fruit and veggies because they’re too busy enjoying how "spooky" everything looks. And let’s be honest, with all the excitement, it’s great to have a few healthier options on the table—especially when they’re this fun to make.
