5 Tips to Make a Fun & Healthy Halloween Platter

Halloween eco platter

With my youngest’s birthday falling on Halloween (talk about lucky timing), every year we go all out to celebrate both the holiday and his special day.

But let’s be real: between the sugar overload from all the trick-or-treating and the party treats, I like to balance things out with keeping the party table healthier.

That’s where this Halloween platter comes in. It’s fun, festive, and still healthy—because as much as I love lollies, there’s only so much a parent can handle, right? Here’s how you can put together a delicious and spooky charcuterie board that kids will love and parents will appreciate. Plus, it’s super easy!

1. Eyeballs Everywhere! 👀

If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years, it’s that Halloween is all about the eyes. The easiest way to spook up any food is to stick googly eyes on it! You can find edible eyes at the supermarket, draw eyes on mandarin peels or even carve little eyes into brie cheese like I did (yep, it’s easier than it sounds). My boys love it when I surprise them with food that "looks" back at them—it’s an instant hit!

2. Reusable Plastic Spiders 🕷️

We’ve been using the same little plastic spiders for years, and they never fail to bring the spooky factor to any dish. Just scatter them around your platter, and voila—instant Halloween magic. My kids love picking them off their plates, and I love that I can use them again next year (because let’s be honest, keeping things easy is key during the holidays).

3. Cookie Cutters for the Win 🍪

Cookie cutters aren’t just for cookies, my friend! This year, I decided to use a ghost-shaped cookie cutter on rockmelon slices. I then used a straw to cut out the eyes and mouth, and it was a total hit. It’s such a simple trick, but it really transforms basic fruit into something fun and festive. You can also try pumpkins, bats, or witches—whatever makes your Halloween spread stand out. Trust me, the kids will be talking about it for days.

4. Olives: Spooky Spiders and Creepy Eyes 🕸️

This was one of those “why didn’t I think of this sooner?” moments. Olives are perfect for adding a spooky touch to your Halloween platter! Use black olives to create edible spiders by placing them in dips, or pop them on sandwiches to make them look like eerie little eyes staring back at you. They’re creepy, delicious, and best of all—plastic-free. My kids aren’t always fans of olives, but when they show up looking like spiders or eyes, they can’t resist giving them a try!

5. Spooky Dips in Fun Bowls 🥣

If there’s one thing that screams Halloween, it’s getting creative with dips. I use small bowls (like our bobo&boo plant-based snack bowls) to serve dips and dress them up. Slice capsicum into thin strips and arrange them around the bowl to look like spider legs, or carve a scary face into a whole capsicum and fill it with your dip. It’s simple, spooky, and totally customisable. My boys get a kick out of making the dips look like creepy crawlies, and it adds a fun twist to snack time.

Why a Healthy Halloween Platter?

With all the sweets around this time of year, it’s nice to balance things out with something healthy but still fun. My kids never even notice they’re eating more fruit and veggies because they’re too busy enjoying how "spooky" everything looks. And let’s be honest, with all the excitement, it’s great to have a few healthier options on the table—especially when they’re this fun to make.

So whether you're planning a Halloween party or just enjoying a themed snack night at home, this easy platter is sure to be a hit. You can let your imagination run wild, involve the kids in the process, and end up with a festive spread that everyone can enjoy (even if they’ve already eaten their weight in candy).

Happy Halloween from our spooky kitchen to yours! 🎃
