FAQ

Why you can do better than BPA-free baby products

What is BPA?

Bisphenol A, often known as BPA, is a chemical found in hard plastics. BPA is an endocrine disruptor – a substance which interferes with the production, secretion, transport, action, function and elimination of natural hormones. BPA can imitate our body’s own hormones in a way that could be hazardous for health. Babies and young children are said to be especially sensitive to the effects of BPA (Source: Medical News Today). Research of this kind has supported a move towards BPA-free baby products.

I only buy BPA-free baby products. Is that good enough?

Many plastics, including BPA-free baby products, contain other chemical plasticisers. These are also endocrine disruptors and, given their similarity to BPA, they could cause many of the same health issues. According to Carl Baum, MD, Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Yale School of Medicine and the Director of the Center for Children’s Environmental Toxicology, some plasticisers may be even more dangerous for our children than BPA.

Can I do better than BPA-free baby products?

While buying BPA-free baby products is a good start, given this information, we believe the only rational path as a parent is to generally avoid buying plastic products for your kids whenever possible – especially when it comes to products that regularly come into contact with food or drinks. Non-plastic baby products, like those made from bamboo, offer a safer alternative.

What are bobo&boo dinnerware products made of?

Our non-plastic dinnerware products are made from natural, renewable and sustainable materials. This means they are non-toxic and biodegradable. Bamboo fibre accounts for around 55 per cent of the product. The products also incorporate PLA Resin (derived from plants) and a small mix of other natural fibres such as bran and cornstarch. The colour makes up .5 per cent of the ingredients and is food safe. Read more about why bamboo is best on our About page.

Can bobo&boo bamboo dinnerware be put in the dishwasher?

Absolutely. We know how busy you are, so we’re ensured all our products are completely dishwasher safe, to help save you precious time! For longevity, we do recommend placing them on the top shelf of the dishwasher, where the water temperature is a little lower.

Can I put bobo&boo bamboo dinnerware in the microwave?

To ensure the longevity of our products, we do not recommend microwaving them. If microwaving is necessary, bobo&boo recommends using glass or ceramic products, over plastics – even BPA free plastics. For more information, read our blog ‘What you need to know about microwaving plastics’.

Will bobo&boo bamboo dinnerware break if dropped?

While your bobo&boo dinnerware is designed to last, they’re not indestructible. While they can survive many falls, they may crack if dropped on hard surfaces or at a bad angle. Unlike glass or ceramic though, they don’t shatter.
